It's been a quite a while since i made a journal. making journals take quite a long time and a substantial amount of focus. it's pretty difficult to find the amount of time that i need to conceptualize and construct one these days. my mind is so all over the place ... baby, creating, school, lunch, dinner, etc. so most of the time, i only make journals when there is a request for it.
last week, i managed to make 2. one was a request from a lovely lady Leslie Marsh, who is herself an accomplished book artist and a fantastic photographer. i was so honored to be asked to make a journal for her :) she wanted to combine certain elements that she liked in some of my older works and this was what came out of it ... Ancient West.
working on Ancient West propelled me into the mood, and so i made another journal. a smaller palmsize journal. Fallen Angel, i called it. which didn't actually start that way.
this journal turned out totally the opposite as what I had intended it to be. it was conceived as a Being of Light … something that would have come out of Lothlorien. but it wasn’t to be.
IT, wanted to be dark. it made me make it go darker and darker and darker. i wonder why. i wonder who broke it, that now it no longer has any goodness left within. but, perhaps there is, deep within its soul. because i believe that the Angel is not inherently bad. it was just left so broken, that the goodness could never surface again. not unlike what Sauron did to the Elves, who became the Uruk-hai(s) in the Lord of the Rings.
well, those were the 2 journals i made. feeling quite smug that i actually managed 2 last week :p before i run off to the baby again, i'll leave you with another pair of books ... not so dark, but more romantic tiny wearable books :)

Stunning Luthien...a textural dream indeed!
ReplyDeleteINDEED, STUNNING!
ReplyDeleteI swoon over these!!!! I have to try my hand at welding something fun like this. However, I have no idea where you get all those beautiful little pieces. Love the tribal marks on the papers too. Just love them! I feel like such a slacker see what you do.
ReplyDeleteL- you and MJ are two of the most thoughtful creatives I know. Behind even 'ordinary' pieces such as a journal you place so much meaning and thought. No piece leaves your studio without being filled with meaning and energy. And each piece is unique and beautiful. Go well and continue to find the time to create so well. B
ReplyDeleteWow these are stunning! I love your books so much - every time you surpass yourself!
ReplyDeleteAs usual some beautiful pieces. Even the dark one-which I believe will be saved by the journalist. I must commend you on
ReplyDeletehaving so much on your plate and still
being able to create.
Lucky me! I think all of your books are stunning, and I can hardly wait to hold Ancient West in my hands. You are such an inspiration! I love Fallen Angel too!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!

Loving those luscious tombs, found an amazing old book on one of my vintage trawls with marbled papers on the inner covers.
