little people : shredded thoughts

Something i found whilst destashing my craft-stuff a few days ago, reminded me that time indeed just whizzes by without us even noticing it. Gave me a kind of electric shock I guess.

What I found was a tiny pencil. I remember picking this tiny old pencil up from the floor outside my daughter’s kindergarten some years ago. In fact, thru the years I have picked up at least 3 tiny, discarded pencils. They all have similar characteristics … tiny, blunt, messed up, and all of them have battered butts, probably the result of little teeth chewing on them.

When I found this little pencil in one of my trays, images came flooding into my mind. Little kids sitting on little chairs and tables, drawing with pencils such as this one. How many children have found joy with this pencil? Could Llara be one of them? Did she ever use this pencil? Was she one of the little culprits who caused its battered butt? It made me smile …

Time waits for no one, and all of a sudden you realize that little people have grown into big people ... too soon.

I listed this on etsy a couple of days ago, but today, I took it down. I seem to have developed a certain attachment to this little one. Maybe I'll keep it or perhaps gift it someone the cosmic wants me to give to. We'll wait and see what happens ...

Lately I've also realized that (so many realizations!!) I've been extremely drawn to fibers. I'm using so much more of it, even my usually steampunky little books have become all flurry and shredded and fabricky ...

Wonder how long this fiber fetish is gonna last ...

  1. Love the way you enclosed the little pencil in this pendant - just wonderful! And the fibers in your pieces are lovely - a bit wabi sabi and a bit mysterious.

  5. aww how our little people grow...from little pencil chewers to grown up Ipad users in the blink of an eye. I'm a huge lover of textiles, love the contrast of metal and tattered lace.

  6. Fibres work well with your antique look. You'll know when it's time to part with the pencil.

  9. Hi L - I had to lol when I read "all flurry and shredded and fabricky". It is funny how from time to time we get attached to adding a certain medium or creating certain objects - I say go with the muse and enjoyment while it is there. The fibre does add age, mystery and a softening to the pieces. Go well and continue to fibre well. B

  10. Your doll is amazing. I am always drawn to dolls, they speak to me. The whole idea of the little pencil, transformed from a written instrument to a talisman. I would not want to part with it either.
Part of your daughter's history lies within it.
