a short update and some recycling

hello :)

i know i know... it's been ages since i posted. i've just been too busy to do anything. have not crafted a single thing since all those christmas gifts. the fact is ... i've been busy working, real work :) which is great because it means my bills get paid... finally :) i'm on a project choreographing a short musical sketch for british american tobacco. so i'm busy everyday with rehearsals, recording, music editing and more rehearsals. the event will be on the 22nd of this month which means i'll be tied up at least till that date. just round the corner after that will be the chinese new year celebration on the 26th and 27th of jan. phew! a month full of activities! i'm not complaining though... at least i'm working :)

anyway since i haven't made anything new, i'll post something old. these were large platters that were destined for the trash. so instead of having them thrown away, i cut up some old newspaper and did some "decoupaging". i cut out a mix and match of interesting news titles in different size fonts, comics, images, different color newspapers, advertisements and anything that caught my fancy and glued them to the platters.

this one i used as a base to my boring wall clock. i chose only black and white newspaper and left it in it's original color so that it matches the gray clock.

i made the next one with slightly more variations by sticking bolder colored cuttings, images and words together. then i stained it with a bit of brown wood stain to give it the aged newspaper look. this one i used as a tray.

i finished both the decoupaged platters with 1 coat of sealer and 3 coats of varnish.

i've always had a thing for newspapers, especially vintage ones (though i don't think i can find those easily and even if i did, would i cut them up? :DDD) these platters took me only one afternoon to do. i'm actually contemplating doing something like that to my old metal drawer unit :)) really easy crafting ... just old newspaper, glue, varnish and patience :) plus... it saves things from going to the trash :)))

happy pimping! :)

  1. Wow, love that clock idea and the platters. You've inspired me to re-do my kitchen clock :D
Glad to see you posting again!

  2. Those are so cute! Sorry I've also been MIA lately in visiting. Just been so tired since Christmas. Coming back to myself slowly. I will be posting about the tag you sent me tonight along with another award I received. Hope you can stop by and see it. Always good to hear you're working again. I know you enjoy what you do. Have a great day, my friend. xxoo

  3. You are a crafty one! Like very much the idea of taking something that was going to be thrown out and making it beautiful and useful again.

  4. Hi Luthien,

I've nominated you for a Lemonade Stand Award which is all nonsense but a bit of fun. It honors blogs which have great attitude and/or gratitude.

Pick it up at my Blog, if you'd like it.

It's time-consuming to adhere to the little requirements attached to it, so only do as much as you feel you can, or nothing at all. It took me over two hours this morning, and I'm still commenting!

  5. Congratulations on your job Luthien, I know how important it is - enjoy!♥

  6. hi ladies :)
thank you so much for your lovely comments and encouragement :)

fran, wow! thanks for the award... i'll go get it as soon as i have some time :)

  7. Luthien,

You constantly amaze me with your art work. Your ideas are so creative.

And, thank you for the reminder of patience. I need a reminder now and again.

    Love Melissa

  8. Luthien,

Yes they are tiny little plates made to look like post cards. I, of course, found them at Renditions.

Thank you sweetie for your kind comments.

    Love Melissa

sf...lol! just a simple staff party production :) nothing great, just great FUN! i hope you are right about 2009... yet, we must all be really careful, economy still looks pretty unstable to me... let's hope for the best!

hello cindy :)... you have a really cool blog :) thanks for visiting! and yea... hectic is good ... it means we get to work and pay bills :)))

  12. Luthien,

I can't wait to see the plates after you create them. They will be beautiful.

Your comment that you left me was so moving. I love your kindness and genuineness.

    Love Melissa

  13. Thanks a bunch for checking out my blog! I love your stuff too - I'm still checking it all out. The mini clothespins on my heart board are really cool - lots of stuff to do with them. I strung up a bit of ribbon and I hang up my kids art using the pins. Nifty stuff!

  14. I've passed along "The Lemonade Award" to you!
I know how hard it is to find time anymore, and how hard it is to choose just 10 bloggers...so I'm leaving these awards to the ones I choose with out any strings! Just pass it along to whomever you wish...1 or 10 or 100 of your favorite bloggers to pass it along to their favorites!

  15. Hi Luthien,
It has been a little while since I've written to you. I miss your beautiful crafts but I certainly understand what's going on. I hope all is good with you and your family. I'll visit again soon.

thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment on my post :) it makes my day!!
Luthien :)
